March 26
I woke up and my neck and upper back were stiff and fairly sore. Grub was outside on his back deck working on stuff and I joined him. I gave him the scoop on the accident and apologized again and he was very kind and understanding about it all. We had some time so we decided to grab breakfast before Exene and Raven came to pick me up to head for San Antonio. We ate breakfast at a decent Tex-Mex place called Curras. When we got back to his place, Exene was parked in his drive way. Grub seemed excited to meet her so I introduced them quickly then I grabbed my guitar, luggage bag and backpack and was shocked when she opened up the back door of her car to see it packed to the roof with stuff. Hers and Raven’s stuff. It was as if she had forgotten that I would be joining her to play gigs with her for 3 and a half weeks or something. We pulled everything out and Raven re-Tetris-ed it all back in and off we went. San Antone-bound.
The trip to SA was only an hour and a half. Exene had already reserved her and Raven’s room at the fancy El Tropicano hotel and I was stressing out cuz the rooms were $150 each, I had no one to share the cost with, we hadn’t really made any money on tour yet and I left home broke as all fuck. I didn’t know who in SA I could get ahold of to see about finding a place to crash at for the night so I nauseatingly ponied up the $150 and went up to my room and stayed until it was time to leave for the gig. I had hoped to rest up but once I laid down, my mind was abuzz and I decided to play guitar instead. Once that started, I got stuck on a little melody I made up and before long, I had my mini-recording setup set up and laid down a rough version of a new song.
I’m calling it, “This Is My Trainwreck” and yes, i’m fairly certain it’s at least halfway autobiographical :)
On the way to the Ten Eleven club, Exene drove us down by the Alamo but there was no parking so we gave up on stopping. Got to the club and hung around until showtime. There was an opener and then I went on. I think I did well. I’ve had some really fun gigs here in San Antonio and at this venue in particular and I was hoping for some enthusiasm. I got a small amount but rocked my way through, anyway.
Exene’s set was much better than the one she played in Austin with her friends. There’s something very sweet and moving about her up their alone with just her guitar and voice. She seemed a little shaky but the crowd loved every word and every note and she responded to that.
After the gig, we went back to the hotel. Exene, Raven and I sorta bonded over the choices of junk food we made at the machine in the lobby. I opted for a 7-Up and a bag of Bugles (*note to self: never tell Allyson that this is what I had for dinner that late night in San Antonio).
